During the assessment phase, the country of resettlement examines the refugee’s case under the Union Resettlement and Humanitarian Admission Framework.

This phase may include interviews, review of supporting documents, medical examinations where necessary, and further assessment of the refugee’s protection needs, vulnerabilities, and family situation. 

During interviews, authorities may ask questions about the refugee’s personal background, family composition, reasons for displacement and fear of return, place of residence, and any specific medical or protection needs. The assessment may also include the examination of issues related to exclusion or refusal grounds under the Union Framework. 

The purpose of the assessment phase is to determine whether the refugee fulfils the admission requirements under the Union Framework and whether the case may proceed to a conclusion on admission. 

Providing clear and correct information throughout the procedure is important. Refugees should receive information about the admission process, what to expect during interviews, and the possible next steps of the procedure.
