Once all administrative and logistical preparations are completed, refugees travel to the country of resettlement. Preparations may include obtaining travel documents, visas, exit permits, health clearances, and arranging transportation.

Many countries cooperate with IOM to organise travel and provide support before departure. In other cases, national authorities arrange travel directly. Shortly before departure, refugees often receive pre-embarkation briefings with practical information regarding the journey, arrival procedures, baggage, and transit arrangements.

Upon arrival, refugees are usually welcomed by national authorities or organisations responsible for reception and integration support.
