Information provision messages

Inform beneficiaries of international protection about the following.

• Their rights to receive a travel document, how and where to apply for one and the timelines for doing so. 
• It is optional to have a travel document. Due to the limited validity and associated costs, it is recommended to request one only if they need to travel outside the country.
• The differences between various types of travel documents (e.g. for beneficiaries of refugee status vs subsidiary protection), including eligibility criteria, validity, renewal processes and the costs.
• The distinction between a travel document and a national passport: a travel document is not a national passport, but it is the one they can use as beneficiaries of international protection. Using their national passports to travel is not recommended/allowed and may affect their protection status.
• The available support services that can provide additional information and assistance in requesting the travel document.
• Information on the general use of the travel document, including where it can be used it and when additional visa requirements may be necessary. 

Practical tips

• Organise group information sessions to provide beneficiaries of international protection with information on the types of travel documents, eligibility criteria, validity periods, costs and other related topics, allowing them to ask questions.
• Include indications of digital sources (e.g. websites of the issuing authority) where beneficiaries can access more information on travel documents.
• Include information on the travel documents in the information materials related to the freedom of movement within the EU.
